Jobless will have to work for the dole or lose benefits

UNEMPLOYED people claiming the dole will be made to work in the community for their benefits under new government plans.

Social Protection Minister Eamon O Cuiv has revealed that the new measures could be enforced within months.

Jobless on free college courses will get to keep the dole

Normally students have to pay for part-time courses but the extra places are being created for free to help unemployed people update their skills and get back into the jobs market.

The new places, which will be on undergraduate certificate and degree-level programmes, span the sciences, business, engineering and technology sectors.

Education Minister Batt O’Keeffe said that 13 institutes of technology, four universities and the National College of Ireland were part of the initiative.

Students who are unemployed or have been made redundant will be able to do a part-time certificate or degree and their fees will be fully covered by the scheme for the full duration of the course.

The scheme is open to all those who have been in receipt of Job Seeker’s Allowance or Benefit for the six months or more prior to the commencement of the course. The scheme is also open to those who have been awarded statutory redundancy.

Almost 80 per cent of staff in a new survey said they would be willing to take a pay cut if it helped their employers survive the recession. Another 94 per cent said they would be happy to take on extra responsibility if it meant keeping their job.

The new survey which reveals workers' flexibility when it comes to making concessions in order to keep their jobs was carried out by office recruitment firm Top People.

Three weeks ago I lost my job. I was devastated. I had never been unemployed before. I had no idea what to do; or where to go to get help.

I looked for a book that might help me. I was amazed; there wasn't one book anywhere to help people like me who'd lost their jobs. So I decided to write one.

Redundancy Payment Rights

WITH job losses running at record levels, many people now have reason to be grateful for the increases in the statutory minimum redundancy rate agreed between the social partners some years ago.

This increase saw the minimum payment level rise, from one half week's pay per year of service for persons aged below 41 and one week per year for those above that age, to two weeks' pay per year for everyone. The entitlement to an additional week's pay on top of this was retained.
